Jobs in South Africa
Inside (Full Frame) Marty Strydom (Eric Stoltz), an idealistic university professor from a prominent white South African family, is accused of conspiring to subvert the government after attending an Amnesty International concert in Zimbabwe. The job of making him confess falls to Colonel Kruger (Nigel Hawthorne) of the Secret Police. Without a confession, to put Strydom on trial could focus the attention of the country and the entire world on the atrocities committed against both whites and blacks in the name of apartheid. Marty withstands two days of physical torture and the Colonel's manipulative questioning, but breaks finally when Kruger confronts him with false testimony, allegedly given by his friends, claiming he plotted against the regime. Borne under by the rigors of solitary confinement and shattered to believe that his friends have betrayed him, he loses his will to survive and takes his own life. Ten years later, after power in South Africa has passed to the black majority, there is a new investigation. This time it is Colonel Kruger being questioned by a black interrogator (Louis Gossett Jr.). Most of the files documenting the abuse of the Secret Police's victims were destroyed, but Strydom's file is one that remains; and it could incriminate the Colonel if the questioner handles it shrewdly.
Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its Consequences by Geoffrey C. Bowker, What do a seventeenth-century mortality table (whose causes of death include "fainted in a bath," "frighted," and "itch"); the identification of South Africans during apartheid as European, Asian, colored, or black; and the separation of machine- from hand-washables have in common? All are examples of classification -- the scaffolding of information infrastructures. In "Sorting Things Out, Geoffrey Bowker and Susan Leigh Star explore the role of categories and standards in shaping the modern world. In a clear and lively style, they investigate a variety of classification systems, including the International Classification of Diseases, the Nursing Interventions Classification, race classification under apartheid in South Africa, and the classification of viruses and of tuberculosis. "Sorting Things Out has a moral agenda, for each standard and category valorizes some point of view and silences another. Standards and classifications produce advantage or suffering. Jobs are made and lost; some regions benefit at the expense of others. How these choices are made and how we think about that process are at the moral and political core of this work. The book is an important empirical source for understanding the building of information infrastructures.
