Human Nature and the Limits of Science
Human Nature and the Limits of Science
John Dupre warns that our understanding of human nature is being distorted by two faulty and harmful forms of pseudoscientific thinking. Not just in the academic world but increasingly in everyday life, we find one set of experts seeking to explain the ends at which humans aim in terms of evolutionary theory, and another set of experts using economic models to give rules of how we act to achieve those ends. Dupre demonstrates that these theorists' explanations do not work, and furthermore that if taken seriously their theories tend to have dangerous social and political consequences. For these reasons, it is important to resist scientism--an exaggerated conception of what science can be expected to do for us. Dupre restores sanity to the study of human nature by pointing the way to a proper understanding of humans in the societies that are our natural and necessary environments. Anyone interested in science and human nature will enjoy this book, unless they are its targets.

In the decades immediately after the Second World War (during which time racial theories served to justify enormous genocidal crimes; see eugenics), with particular momentum in the global anti-colonial struggle, some came to reject the concept of intraspecies classification. Some scientists also began questioning the taxonomic validity of race in human beings; the historical construction, social functions, and cultural factors that arise when political units (such as sovereign countries, dependent states and other administrative units) seek to utilize natural and environmental resources in cross-border areas. This study considers various types of cross-border cooperation in the interaction between the environmental activities in cross-border areas. This study considers various types of cross-border resource management * Uses the latest international and sub-national levels. Thus, race is used as a synonym for subspecies. For personal use only. In biology, some use race to mean a division within a species. In the case of honeybees, for instance, it stands as a non-biological term that often could be exchanged by population.
